Tributes paid after passing of Bulldogs legend ‘JP’

LEGEND: Jean-Paul Vaillancourt, who played a pivotal role during the development of the Bulldogs during the 1980s.

IT is with great sadness that we bring you news of the death of former Bradford Bulldogs player, Jean-Paul Vaillancourt. 

Canadian-born ‘JP’ - as he was known to friends and team-mates - played a major part in the development of the team during the 1980s, proving to be one of the team’s most formidable players alongside Karel Stanek. 

His sons Luc and Marc also went on to play for the Bulldogs.

Stephen French - one of the original Bulldogs who formed the club back in 1976 - said: “JP was a legend and regarded as one of the top players around during his day. 

“Some people felt he was destined to make it all the way to the NHL - back when there were only 10 teams - but his dad made him get a proper job! 

“He was a great player and a top man and played a major part in developing the team during the 1980s. 

“His sons Marc and Luc were also excellent players during their time here and our thoughts are with all of JP’s family.” 

Andy Brown, Bulldogs’ director of hockey and the club’s head coach, added: “JP’s time with the club came before my involvement, but I have heard plenty about how great he was.

“He was clearly an influential figure in helping develop the club in those early years and, like a lot of people involved back then, without them, the Bulldogs wouldn’t be here today. 

“On behalf of the club, I’d like to offer our best thoughts and wishes to his family at this sad time.”
